Our Story

My Kava Hut is a family-owned business based on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, founded by Herbie and Selena Henderson.

Both Herbie and Selena grew up on the Sunshine Coast, meeting at high school in Caloundra before later marrying and beginning a new chapter together in Vanuatu. Herbie spent much of his childhood on the island of Espiritu Santo, where he completed part of his schooling before returning to Australia. His lifelong connection to Vanuatu inspired the couple to return and experience the South Pacific together.

                                       

During their time in Vanuatu, they welcomed the first of their three children while embracing the island lifestyle. Herbie worked in his family's business, while Selena enjoyed raising their young family and immersing herself in the rich culture and natural beauty of Vanuatu. Weekends were spent exploring the islands; snorkelling, fishing, swimming at Champagne Beach, and travelling into remote villages where they supported local Ni-Vanuatu families with essential supplies and community assistance.

Some of their fondest memories include the warmth and generosity of the Ni-Vanuatu people, enjoying fresh organic produce, living from the land, and sharing the beauty of Vanuatu with visiting family and friends.

   

With family ties to Vanuatu dating back to 1913, Herbie was honoured to represent the country in its first-ever Rugby League team. He played five matches, including two international Test matches, in Sydney, Port Vila, and at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium. Representing Vanuatu remains one of his proudest achievements and reflects the deep connection his family has with the country.

Today, that connection continues through the next generation. Herbie and Selena's son has proudly represented Vanuatu Rugby League at both junior and senior levels, becoming the youngest player to represent the Vanuatu Open Men's Rugby League team. It is a reflection of our family's ongoing commitment to Vanuatu, its people, and the opportunities that sport creates within our communities.

That lifelong connection inspired the creation of My Kava Hut. Through our business, we are proud to share premium noble kava and a small part of Vanuatu's culture, tradition, and hospitality with communities across Australia.
